October 15-31, 2010
Theatre Memphis lobby area
In tandem with the play “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure”

As a tribute to those who have played Holmes on stage and screen, artist Lin Workman will have a one man show running in tandem with Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure. “Elementary: The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes” is a show built specifically around the Theatre Memphis production. Workman’s art in this show represents many of the real life people who came to fame playing Sherlock Holmes. “I started off doing my favorite Holmes- Basil Rathbone,” Workman says, “ but wanted to show a variety of Sherlocks from different times and with different looks. I have Basil, Peter Cushing, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Brett, Michael Cain, and a few surprises including James Bragington- a studio employee who was promoted to actor for the first full length British Holmes feature A Study in Scarlet because he looked like Holmes.” The show has been over a year in the works with the first contact being made in 2009 to Workman about a show to run with the Theatre Memphis production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. That show did not materialize due to a schedule conflict but the communication channels were left open to discuss a show in 2010. The work in the Theatre Memphis show will all be in black and white acrylic paint airbrushed on canvases that are approximately 3’ x 4’.

Workman is an accomplished cartoonist and muralist and has work that has appeared in the Memphis Flyer and The Commercial Appeal locally. He has been published nationally in Airbrush Action Magazine and Amazing Figure Modeler. He has completed murals for Pancho’s Restaurant, McDonald’s, Haunted Web of Horrors haunted house and Fitzgerald’s Casino in Tunica. Formerly an artist and screen printer in the t-shirt industry and a graphic artist designing tombstones and other monuments, he is the creator of the web-comic Scared Silly and is the co-creator of the self-published comic book series Bushi Tales. He was recently a Star Wars sketchcard artist on The Empire Strikes Back 3-D card set by Topps. Workman has also served as President and Vice President of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association.

Thanks to Shawn and Jon for having us on!

Lin

PS- I’ve got Comic Whore banner ads up on the CGS site and forums. You may even see some art I did for their home page! It changes artists each time you visit.

Halloween has been always been one of my favorite holidays. Mostly because I loved the escapism of dressing up in costume. Before the term Cosplay had been uttered Lin and I both had been Cosplayers. Here are some photos of me (and a few of Lin) in costumes that were hand made. Here’s a photo of me in the first costume my Mom ever made me. It’s Space Ghost.

Please don’t ask what is up with that hideous costume my Dad is wearing. Next is the second costume my Mom made for me. Tri-Klops from Masters of the Universe. I helped with this one.

This is me but many years later in my infamous Magneto costume. I only wore this one once. I made the helmet and assisted with the rest of the costume. But this is still mostly a Mom produced suit. I don’t remember who the kid dressed as Hulk is but that’s my brother dressed up as the ’89 style Batman.

Here’s my most widely seen and my favorite costume- my Bat suit. The boots, cape, and body suit were made by my Mom. The Cowl and utility belt were store bought. For years I wore this outfit sometimes accompanied by friends (Holly Fortner as Catwoman, Dave Johnson as Riddler, and Heath Moore as Phantasm). My Mom, Lin and I made every costume in this picture including the Phantasm mask.

And here are two pics of me in my Superman costume. These are from around the same time as the last photo. The body suit I bought but I made everything else with an assist from Lin.

Here’s a group shot. My Mom, Lin, and I all helped make ever costume in this photo except the Black Cat & Beetlejuice costume. Starting left to right- Me as Superman, Dave Johnson as Count Vertigo, Lin as Beetlejuice, Beth Green as Black Cat, and Greg Stilwell as Reptile. We hit several Halloween parties that night and had a great time. Fun memories.

Here’s the Sub Zero costume. I wore this for a couple of Halloweens but the main use of this was at Martial Arts demonstrations. Greg and I had a choreographed fight were Sub Zero would battle Reptile. We performed this routine at many different events all around the Mid-South area. This photo is from the Northaven Elementary demo. I hold a second degree black belt rating in Aikijujutsu, and first degree ratings in Aikido, Taijutsu, and Goshin Jujitsu. But I haven’t been a practicing Martial Artist or Instructor for eight years or so because of injuries I suffered in an automobile accident.

It’s been many years since I’ve dressed up in a costume. I’m not the young and super-fit guy I use to be. But the usual Halloween outfit for the better part of a decade has always been my traditional Aikido uniform. Here’s a really nice photo Micah took of me in my Aikido rig.

I hope you enjoyed these photos. Brought back a lot of wonderful memories for me. Thanks to my Mom for making most of these costumes, my family and friends for the memories, and Ronnie for scanning a lot of these photos so I could post them. Have a Happy Halloween!

Darkness falls across the land as the DC Universe faces its greatest horror in this Halloween special filled with all-new stories!

Watch as Guy Gardner continues his quest to share Halloween with the cosmos and his fellow alien Green Lantern Corps members. In another tale, Red Robin finds the true, deadly meaning of the sinister holiday while overseas on his quest to find Bruce Wayne.

Meanwhile, Bizarro receives neither trick nor treat in his own backwards celebration of the spookiest night of the year on his home world. Plus, 10 other ghoulish tales to fill you with fright this Halloween! Scott Clark and I worked on one of the stories. This is my first pro credited work for DC and a dream come true. It’s on sale today- so drop by your local comic book store and pick a copy. Sketchbook Wednesday will be Friday this week.
